Harvest progress ahead of averageNebraska For the week ending Oct. 7, corn harvest progress was one week ahead of last year and five days ahead of average, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office, Oct. 8. Soybean harvest made progress too, but has been slowed by high moisture levels and rain during the week. In the west, producers were finishing up dry bean and millet harvest. Other activities include moving cattle to stalk fields and waiting in line at the local elevator. Corn conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 16 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 30 percent excellent, well above last year's 54 percent good or excellent rating. Irrigated fields rated 87 percent good or excellent while dryland fields rated 71 percent, both above year ago levels. Corn mature was 91 percent, behind last year's 93 percent but ahead of the 88 percent average. Corn harvested was 28 percent, ahead of last year's 17 percent and 21 percent average. Stalk integrity continues a concern as high winds and wet conditions impacted stands in many counties. Soybean conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 16 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 27 percent excellent, well above last year's 62 percent good or excellent condition. Soybeans dropping leaves was 96 percent, near last year's 98 percent and 97 percent average. Soybeans harvested was 34 percent, 2 days behind last year's 44 percent and 4 days behind the 48 percent average. Alfalfa fourth cutting was 80 percent complete, behind the 83 percent of last year and average. Sorghum conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 2 percent poor, 14 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 37 percent excellent, well above last year's 56 percent good or excellent condition. Sorghum mature was 93 percent, ahead of last year's 85 percent and 82 percent average. Sorghum harvested was 11 percent, behind last year's 14 percent and 20 percent average. Dry bean harvest neared completion at 94 percent, well ahead of last year's 67 percent and 70 percent average. Winter wheat seeded was 91 percent, ahead of last year's 89 percent but even with the five-year average. Winter wheat emerged was 66 percent, ahead of last year's 62 percent but behind the 68 percent average. Proso millet harvest also neared completion and was 93 percent, well ahead of last year's 68 percent and 74 percent average. Pasture and range conditions rated 4 percent very poor, 12 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 44 percent good, and 13 percent excellent, well above last year's 16 percent good or excellent condition.
