Fall harvest keeps goingKansas Producers averaged 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Oct. 7, with wheat planting and fall harvesting of corn, soybeans, and sorghum the primary activities, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas Field Office, Oct. 8. Topsoil moisture was rated 10 percent very short, 41 percent short, and 49 percent adequate. Subsoil moisture was rated 8 percent very short, 39 percent short, and 53 percent adequate. Fifty-six percent of the wheat has been planted, compared to 71 percent for last year and 68 percent for the five-year average. Twenty-three percent has emerged, compared to 32 percent in 2006 and 35 percent for the five-year average. Sixty-nine percent of corn has been harvested compared to 67 percent last year and 68 percent for the five-year average. Eighty-seven percent of the soybeans are dropping leaves, compared to 91 percent previous year and 89 percent for the five-year average. Twenty-eight percent of soybeans have been harvested, compared to 29 percent last year and 32 percent for the five-year average. Soybean condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 46 percent good, and 14 percent excellent. Stock water supplies were rated 1 percent very short, 15 percent short, 83 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Reports indicated that cattle are being turned out onto crop residue.
