West Plains regional sales

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 4,000 head Oct. 25, compared to 4,992 head last week and 4,459 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, steers calves were $2 to $5 lower, although heifer to mates sold unevenly steady to $2 higher. Yearlings over 700 pounds were fully steady. The supply was moderate. Demand moderate to good, as most uniform bunches of average to better quality calves were snatched to up fairly readily, allowing the majority of heifer calves to regain part of last week's sharp downturn. However, buyers continue to emphasize that weaned calves or those having at least 1 to 2 rounds of respiratory shots are definitely preferred, and will continue to be a main topic at least until first hard frost and 24 hour temperature swings narrow. The feeder supply consisted of 51% steers, 3% bulls and 46% heifers, with nearly 36% weighed over 600 pounds.
