Rulon Gardner, Kristina Marie to entertain at RC&D Conference

Nebraska

The Sandhills Resource Conservation and Development Council will be hosting the Nebraska RC&D Association Annual Conference Oct. 2 to 4, at the Grey Goose Lodge in Ogallala, Neb.

The meeting will begin Oct. 2, with training sessions for non-profit directors and special tours lined up for spouses/guests. Guest speaker for the Oct. 2 evening banquet will be Rulon Gardner, 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist in Greco-Roman Wrestling, who now travels the country sharing his personal experiences to illustrate how persistence leads to success. Rulon's late father, Reed Gardner, was recently inducted into the National RC&D Hall of Fame for his enthusiasm and numerous contributions to conservation and rural development. Tickets for the banquet, presentation and autograph session may be purchased separately by contacting the Sandhills RC&D office.

On Oct. 3, participants will enjoy a tour through the Sandhills RC&D area. Charter buses will leave Ogallala Oct. 3, travel to Lake McConaughy for the first tour stop before continuing on to enjoy a lunch and presentation at Haythorn Land and Cattle. From there participants will head to Sand Hills Golf Club to learn about their world-class golf course. The tour then travels on to the Sandhills RC&D office in Mullen for an update on Natural Resource Tourism Projects and refreshments. The tour will continue west on Highway 2 to Hyannis as participants hear about the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway which stretches from Grand Island to Alliance along Highway 2. From Hyannis, the tour will turn south to Arthur for a tour of the straw bale buildings before arriving back in Ogallala in time for dinner and a program by Krisitina Marie, a local recording artist from Whitman, Neb., who will soon be heading to Nashville.

The conference will conclude Oct. 4 with the State Association business meeting. The conference is open to anyone interested in creating a healthy rural economy along with sustainable communities and environment. Registration materials for all, or part of the conference events may be requested by contacting the Sandhills RC&D office at 308-546-0636 or visiting www.sandhillsrcd.org. Registration deadline is Sept. 14.
