Marketing hay out of stateArkansas Tennessee livestock producers are trying to locate hay outside the state for their animals. Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture Dick Bell recently received a request from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture seeking help in locating hay for the Tennessee livestock industry. A news report broadcast by a Nashville, Tenn., television station highlighted concerns of producers. They're paying above-market prices for in-state hay and are looking for out-of-state sources to help them make it through the winter. Similar hay and forage shortage issues prompting out-of-state marketing efforts have been reported in many of the southeastern states affected by summer drought following a reduced carryover of 2006 hay supplies, according to Robert Seay, Benton County staff chair with the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service. Arkansas hay producers having surplus hay can enter their contact information on the computerized Hay Data Base at: http://hayproducers.uaex.edu/. Once on the site, click on "AR Hay Producers Users Guide," access the online form and enter your information, which can then be submitted online or downloaded for mailing to the address provided. Only Arkansas producers are allowed to enter hay information on this site, however, anyone looking for hay may access the site information, according to Seay. Most states have a similar hay data system in place. Data entered by producers includes: contact information; hay type; bale type, size and weight; and if hay is priced by bale or ton. Keep in mind that information entered will be available to the public until you request that information be removed from the data base. Arkansas producers needing help entering information can contact their county extension agent. The Cooperative Extension Service is part of the U of A Division of Agriculture.
