Harvest startsIowa Harvest of both corn and soybeans got underway during the week ending Sept. 23, and the early varieties of corn and lodged corn are being harvested first, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Iowa Field Office, Sept. 24. The frost of a week ago accelerated crop maturation. Pastures are keeping up with grazing as areas receive timely rain showers. Livestock conditions are good. There were 5.2 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 3.3 days a year ago. Topsoil moisture rated 1 percent very short, 5 percent short, 88 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus across the state. Subsoil moisture rated 2 percent very short, 5 percent short, 86 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus. Eighty-five percent of the corn has reached maturity, ahead of both last year's 79 percent and the five-year average of 73 percent. Statewide, the percent moisture of corn in the field is 24 percent. Seven percent of the corn has been harvested. The percent moisture of corn currently being harvested is 19 percent. Corn lodging across the state is 58 percent none, 27 percent light, 10 percent moderate, and 5 percent heavy. Corn condition rated 2 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 21 percent excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves is at 83 percent, 6 percentage points ahead of last year and 5 percentage points ahead of the five-year average. Soybeans shattering is 87 percent none, 11 percent light, 2 percent moderate, and zero percent heavy. Eleven percent of the soybeans have been harvested. Soybean condition remained unchanged at 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 20 percent excellent. Pasture condition rated 2 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 16 percent excellent. Date: 9/26/07
