Wyobraska cattle sales report

The combined sales volume of Wyoming, western Nebraska and western North and South Dakota auctions for the week ending Oct. 26, totaled 10,600 head, compared to 13,600 head last week and 10,600 head last year, according to the USDA-Wyoming Department of Agriculture Market News, Torrington, Wyo.

Compared to last week at Wyoming auctions, steers and heifers calves unevenly sold. Prices were generally steady to $4 lower, with instances of $5 to $8 lower, except 300- to 400-pound calves in Riverton were $1 to $5 higher. Steers at 550 to 650 pounds at Torrington were steady, with instances of $3 higher, and 450- to 600-pound heifers were steady to $3 higher, with instances of $4 to $6 higher. Yearlings were not fully tested. Demand was good. Direct trading was slow. There weren't enough comparable sales for an adequate market test, but a few steers were steady. Demand was moderate to good. Buyer inquiry was moderate to good. Offerings were moderate. Steers made up approximately 60% of the supply, heifers 40% with 20% over 600 pounds. Direct sales accounted for 800 head of the total receipts.
