Wheat board hosts Israeli trade team

Nebraska

The Nebraska Wheat Board and the Nebraska Wheat Growers Association hosted an Israeli trade team sponsored by U.S. Wheat Associates. While here the eight member team of mill owners and managers were introduced to Nebraska's wheat production and marketing system. They also spent time learning about the quality of Nebraska wheat, its versatility and multiple end-uses.

The tour began at the SouthEast Nebraska Coop Elevator in Beatrice. There the team learned how a typical elevator operates. The team then went to NWB member Delferd Schlake's farm near Blue Springs to see the size and scope of a Nebraska wheat farm.

The team toured Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha. There they learned about rail transportation issues. They also visited ConAgra Foods Headquarters in Omaha, where they discussed wheat markets and hard white wheat. The team toured ConAgra's trade floor, wheat lab and flour mill so they could compare and contrast mills in Nebraska to mills in Israel. The team then traveled to Scoular Grain in Fremont and were shown how grain travels from farm to country elevator and finally to a terminal elevator. At a tour of Rotella's Italian Bakery they were able to see how a large, locally owned commercial bakery operates. Lieutenant Governor Rick Sheehy and Department of Agriculture Trade Representative Stan Garbacz as well as several area wheat producers were among guests at a dinner honoring the trade team.

The stop in Nebraska was part of a ten day tour of the United States. Other locations the trade team visited were Kansas, Louisiana, and Ohio. The purpose of the mission was for the Israeli team to become reacquainted with the US wheat marketing chain and discuss technical and commercial import issues and build relationships.
