Russia mission develops trade for beef geneticsColorado The Colorado Department of Agriculture recently returned from Russia where a delegation developed trade leads for the sale of beef genetics. "Russia is looking to expand its herd size and increase the quality of its breed stock," said Dawn Velásquez de Pérez, CDA international marketing specialist. "Although live cattle exports to Russia are not currently permitted, there is a great opportunity for Colorado's producers to export beef genetics." CDA's Velásquez de Pérez and Skylar Houston of Aristocrat Angus in Platteville, Colo., spent more than a week in Russia meeting with government officials, livestock breeders and the Russian Livestock Improvement Union. The goal of the trip was to develop relationships with Russian trade partners to expand markets for Colorado's exports of beef cattle genetics. After several years of market closure, U.S. exports of beef cattle semen resumed at the beginning of 2007. Colorado hosted two delegations of Russian cattlemen this year. This was the first opportunity for Colorado representatives to visit Russia. Additional trade talks will take place in January 2008 when the Russian cattlemen return to Colorado for the National Western Stock Show.
