Harvest rolling alongIowa A beautiful dry weather allowed farmers to get back into the fields during the week ending Oct. 28, by the end of the week, harvest was in full swing, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Iowa Field Office, Oct. 29. Some fall tillage took place, but many fields are still too wet. There were 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 4.6 days a year ago. Topsoil moisture rated zero percent very short, 1 percent short, 69 percent adequate, and 30 percent surplus across the State. Subsoil moisture rated 1 percent very short, 1 percent short, 65 percent adequate, and 33 percent surplus. Grain movement picked up this week with 18 percent heavy movement, 35 percent moderate, 27 percent light, and 20 percent no movement. Availability of off-farm grain storage rated 22 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. On-farm grain storage availability rated 30 percent short, 68 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Sixty-three percent of the corn has been harvested, 1 percentage point behind last year's progress and 5 points behind the five-year average. Harvested field corn percent moisture is averaging 16 percent. Eighty-eight percent of the soybeans have been harvested, 6 percentage points behind last year's harvest at this time and 9 percentage points behind the five-year average. Fall fertilizer application progressed to 15 percent. Pasture condition rated 3 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 48 percent good, and 15 percent excellent. Use of stubble fields rated 54 percent none, 30 percent limited, 14 percent moderate, and 2 percent extensive. Hay and roughage availability rated 13 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Date: 10/31/07
