Hard freeze ends growing season in most areasNebraska For the week ending Oct. 28, fall harvest picked up in intensity as dry conditions allowed farmers back in the field, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office, Oct. 29. Hard freezing temperatures ended the growing season in most parts of the state. Corn harvest remained ahead of last year and near average, while soybean harvest was still behind. In some parts of the east, additional drying weather was needed with low lying areas too wet to combine. In the west, sugarbeet harvest was finishing up. Other activities around the state included moving cattle to stalk fields and fall tillage. Temperatures averaged near normal across the state. The Northwest District had the biggest variance in temperatures with highs in the mid 80s to lows in the low 20s. It was a dry week except for a few traces of precipitation recorded in the Southwest and North Central Districts. Corn conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 14 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 31 percent excellent, well above last year's 59 percent good or excellent rating. Irrigated fields rated 89 percent good or excellent while dryland fields rated 74 percent, both above year ago levels. Corn harvested was 63 percent complete, 4 days ahead of last year's 52 percent and near the 61 percent average. Soybean harvest was 79 percent complete, 8 days behind last year's 88 percent and 12 days behind the 92 percent average. Sorghum conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 1 percent poor, 13 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 30 percent excellent. Sorghum harvest was 56 percent complete, ahead of last year's 51 percent but behind the 65 percent average. Winter wheat conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 2 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 63 percent good, and 7 percent excellent, below last year's 75 percent good or excellent rating. Winter wheat emerged was 96 percent, near last year's 97 percent and even with the five-year average. Pasture and range conditions rated 5 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 12 percent excellent, well above last year's 19 percent good or excellent condition.
