Wyobraska cattle sales report

The combined sales volume of Wyoming, western Nebraska and western North and South Dakota auctions for the week ending Nov. 17, totaled 9,400 head, compared to 11,200 head last week, and 6,000 head last year, according to the USDA-Wyoming Department of Agriculture Market News, Torrington, Wyo.

Compared to last week at Wyoming auctions, steer and heifer calves sold generally steady to $4 higher, except heifer calves in Riverton under 500 pounds sold steady to $4 lower; yearlings had no good price comparison. Demand was moderate to good with several long strings of preconditioned weaned calves. Overall quality was good to fancy. Direct trading was slow. There were not enough comparable sales for an adequate market test, few sales steady. Demand was moderate to good. Buyer inquiry was moderate to good. Offerings were light to moderate with yearling cattle in short supply. Unless otherwise noted direct prices are current FOB with a 2 to 3% shrink or equivalent and with a 5 to 10 cent from base weight. Steers made up approximately 62% of the supply, heifers 38% with 22% over 600 pounds. Direct sales accounted for 700 head of the total receipts.
