Western Kansas watershed specialist named K-State Communicator of the YearKansas A Western Kansas watershed specialist whose work reached nearly a half-million people in 2006 has been named the Communicator of the Year at Kansas State University. Stacie Minson, formerly of Norton and now working in Hays, received the award during K-State Research and Extension's annual conference in Manhattan on Oct. 16. Minson is the watershed specialist for the Smoky Hill River/Kanopolis Lake Watershed, which reaches several Western Kansas counties. "While Stacie's expertise is in watershed management, she has also shown a complete understanding of key communications principles: recognizing target audiences, providing timely communications, and strategically placing communications in channels that are convenient for her target audiences," said Pat Melgares, the marketing coordinator for K-State Research and Extension, who nominated Minson for the award. "Simply, she's a strategic communicator. She's an excellent choice for this award." By targeting audiences with her communications, Minson has been able to track the potential reach of the communications materials she has produced. In 2006, a list of communications activities shows that the potential reach of her communications work was 458,365 people in targeted audiences. In the first six months of 2007, the potential target audience reach of her communications was 130,751 people. The Communicator of the Year is an award that has been given annually since 2005 to recognize a K-State Research and Extension employee who demonstrates exceptional skill in communicating to the public. Minson received a plaque, and her name will be displayed permanently in the K-State Department of Communications in Manhattan. 11/5/07 Date: 11/21/07 Advertisement
