Nebraska Corn Board salutes the pork industryNebraska October is National Pork Month--a time to promote delicious pork products and celebrate the achievement's of Nebraska's pork producers. Nebraska's pork industry plays an important role in Nebraska's ag economy. Cash receipts from hogs in the state are expected to total $728 million in 2007. There are an estimated three million head of swine and 2,600 swine premises in Nebraska. "The swine industry is also a very important customer for Nebraska corn producers," said Don Hutchens, executive director of the Nebraska Corn Board. "The pork industry will consume about 60 million bushels of corn this year. That number has ranged from 52 to 65 million over the past decade, so it continues to be a very consistent market for corn." Hutchens praised Nebraska's pork producers for their commitment to advancing the pork industry. "Hogs are leaner than ever before due to better genetics, management and breeding practices," Hutchens said. "Production sites are more environmentally sound than ever before with the construction of concrete manure storage pits and intensive nutrient management plans. And producers are continually educating themselves with information and research to produce the highest quality pork, not to mention investing in the newest technologies available in order to be better neighbors." The Nebraska Corn Board supports the state's pork industry in a number of ways. "Our largest area of support is for pork exports through the U.S. Meat Export Federation," Hutchens said. "In the past year alone, the Nebraska Corn Board provided more than $300 thousand dollars in support of USMEF activities. And our total investment in meat exports is over $5 million since USMEF's inception in 1979." Earlier this year, the Nebraska Corn Board provided a sponsorship for Nebraska pork producer Troy McCain of DeWitt to attend the USMEF Market Expo in Japan. Nebraska Corn Board farmer-director David Merrell of St. Edward also attended the USMEF event. The Nebraska Corn Board also helps sponsor in-state pork programs such as the Nebraska Pork Producers Association's Taste of Elegance event and the Nebraska Pork Model. "We also support swine and other livestock and poultry producers through our support of the Alliance for the Future of Agriculture in Nebraska," Hutchens said. "By supporting A-FAN, the Corn Board is helping grow Nebraska's livestock industry. That's good for swine producers and the thousands of individuals and businesses that support them, including corn producers." The Nebraska Corn Board is a self-help program, funded and managed by Nebraska corn farmers. Producers invest in the program at a rate of ? of a cent per bushel of corn sold. Nebraska corn checkoff funds are invested in programs of market development, research and education. 10/29/07 Date: 11/21/07
