Finish line in sightIowa Harvest was nearing completion as fertilizer application, manure spreading, fall tillage, and repair of waterways and tile lines continued during the week ending Nov. 18, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Iowa Field Office, Nov. 19. Some farmers in northern Iowa expect to have their equipment in the barn for the winter by Thanksgiving. In southwest Iowa some fourth cutting of hay is still being put up. There were 6.8 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 5.3 days a year ago. Topsoil moisture rated 3 percent very short, 17 percent short, 76 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus across the state. Subsoil moisture rated 1 percent very short, 7 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 12 percent surplus. Grain movement from farm to elevator rated 7 percent heavy, 30 percent moderate, 32 percent light, and 31 percent no movement. Availability of off-farm grain storage rated 24 percent short, 74 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. On-farm grain storage availability rated 31 percent short, 68 percent adequate, and 1 percent surplus. Ninety-seven percent of the corn has been harvested, 1 percentage point ahead of last year and the five-year average. Soybean harvest is virtually complete with some fields remaining to be harvested in the southern third of the state. Fall fertilizer application progressed to 54 percent for the state. Use of stubble fields rated 41 percent none, 26 percent light, 26 percent moderate, and 7 percent heavy. Hay and roughage availability rated 11 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus with a rated quality of 7 percent poor, 37 percent fair, and 56 percent good.
