Corn harvest ahead of averageNebraska For the week ending Nov. 18, the fourth straight week of dry weather combined with unseasonably warm temperatures allowed corn harvest to progress near completion, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office, Nov. 19. Corn harvest remained ahead of last year and average. In the west, producers were being encouraged to irrigate wheat due to the dry conditions. Other activities around the state included moving cattle to stalk fields, fall tillage, and applying fertilizer. Temperatures averaged eight degrees above normal across the state. The Southwest District had the biggest variance in temperature with highs in the upper 70s and lows in the single digits. Precipitation was absent across the majority of the state with only traces in a few districts. Corn harvested was 97 percent complete, 8 days ahead of last year's 92 and 5 days ahead of the 92 average. Sorghum harvest was 98 percent complete, ahead of the 95 of last year and average. Winter wheat conditions moved lower and rated 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 4 percent excellent, below last year's 59 percent good or excellent rating.
