The Keeper of the Plains welcomes you to WichitaBy Susen Foster The city of Wichita has me under its spell. No matter where you look there is scenic beauty, cultural diversity, historic landmarks and attractions, entertainment venues, miles and miles of shopping options and almost too many choices of what to put in a hungry tummy. This season is a perfect time to visit Wichita. No matter what your style or taste, there is always something to do. If you like ballet, then be sure to take in the classic holiday performance of The Nutcracker at the Wichita Orpheum on Dec. 16. According to the Oakland Tribune "even those who know The Nutcracker inside out have probably never seen an interpretation as colorful and uniquely flavored--not to mention expertly executed--as this performance by the Moscow Ballet." (www.wichitaorpheum.com) Opera? On Dec. 1, Wichita Grand Opera presents Giuseppe Verdi's "A Masked Ball"--a story of forbidden love, honor and betrayal--featuring the thrilling tenor of Hector Sandoval and Zvetelina Vassileva, one of Europe's most celebrated sopranos. (www.wichitagrandopera.org) Or maybe you are more comfortable in cowboy hats and spurs. Wichita has that covered, too. Sitting on the banks of the Arkansas River, Old Cowtown Museum (www.oldcowtown.org) is an open-air living history museum that interprets life in Wichita and Sedgwick County during the late 1880s. For two special weekends, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 and Dec. 7 and 8, experience the enchantment of a Victorian Holiday as Cowtown celebrates an Old-fashioned Christmas with music, caroling, and holiday treats. Then join world renowned Prairie Rose Wranglers, who welcome you to share the holidays with them at the Diamond W Chuckwagon Christmas Shows there at Cowtown. Another gem in this city's crown of attractions is Botanica--The Wichita Gardens. Overflowing with acres of varietal gardens, ponds, greenhouses and groves, Botanica celebrates nature beautifully and their annual holiday gift to us all is "Illuminations--a Sparkling Wonderland of Light." Four thousand brilliant luminarias and shimmering holiday lights set the garden paths aglow while seasonal music fills the air on Nov. 23 and 24, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, and again on Dec. 7 and 8. There will also be holiday treats, free children's crafts and visits with Santa. (www.botanica.org) The long list of concerts coming to Wichita this season include such stars as the Oak Ridge Boys, Riders in the Sky, Clay Aiken, Asleep at the Wheel, Cross Canadian Ragweed, and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Maybe you enjoy live theater performances like "Amahl and the Night Visitors", "Honky Tonk Angels", "A Cabaret Christmas", "Holidazzle" or "The Year Santa Almost Forgot". Or perhaps fine arts exhibits are more up your alley--like the Miniature Christmas Tree Exhibit or the Watercolor Society Show.
