Harvest wrapping up

Harvest is wrapping up in the northern half of the state, while the focus is still on harvest in the southern half during the week ending Nov. 11, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Iowa Field Office, Nov. 13.

The south central district harvested more than 25 percent of their corn this past week and 17 percent of their soybeans. The weather has been conducive to working in the fields and favorable for livestock. Fertilizer application, manure spreading, fall tillage, and repair of waterways and tiles continue.

There were 6.9 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 5.0 days a year ago. Topsoil moisture rated 1 percent very short, 11 percent short, 81 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus across the State. Subsoil moisture rated 1 percent very short, 4 percent short, 81 percent adequate, and 14 percent surplus.

Grain movement rated 10 percent heavy movement, 29 percent moderate, 35 percent light, and 26 percent no movement. Availability of off-farm grain storage rated 24 percent short, 73 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. On-farm grain storage availability rated 32 percent short, 66 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Storage availability is unchanged from last week.

Ninety-three percent of the corn has been harvested, 1 percentage point ahead of last year and 2 points ahead of the five-year average. Harvested field corn percent moisture is averaging 15 percent. Ninety-nine percent of the soybeans have been harvested. Soybean harvest has been completed by this time in years past. Fall fertilizer application progressed to 40 percent for the state.

Use of stubble fields rated 41 percent none, 28 percent light, 24 percent moderate, and 7 percent heavy. Hay and roughage availability rated 12 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus with a rated quality of 8 percent poor, 36 percent fair, and 56 percent good.
