USDA Rural Development to host value-added producer grant inforGrant funds available to assist projects
Kansas USDA Rural Development State Director Chuck Banks announced recently that the agency will host three informational meetings covering USDA's Value-Added Producer Grant Program. The meetings will cover the details of this USDA program which can assist agricultural producers and other eligible groups interested in the development of commodity based value-added businesses. In announcing the upcoming public meetings, State Director Banks commented, "Establishing value-added businesses will provide agricultural producers the opportunity to develop alternative energy sources and also create additional value-added products that can support economic development for our Kansas communities. These USDA grant funds can provide valuable assistance in these areas where the agricultural sector can be a leader in forging important new solutions to challenges facing our Nation."
The USDA Value-Added Producer Grant Program meeting details, including the location and time of the presentations, follows: --April 16: Independence, 1 to 3 p.m., USDA Service Center, 410 Peter Pan Road, Independence. --April 17: McPherson, 10 a.m. to noon, Cedar's Community Center, 1021 Cedars Drive, McPherson. --April 18: Dodge City, 9:30 to 11 a.m., Conference Room, High Plains Journal, 1500 East Wyatt Earp, Dodge City.
Registration will begin 30 minutes before start times. USDA's Value-Added Producer Grant Program funding may be used for planning activities, such as feasibility studies, marketing and business plans needed to establish a viable value-added marketing opportunity for an agricultural product, or to provide working capital for operating a value-added business venture, marketing value-added agricultural products and for farm-based renewable energy projects. Eligible applicants are independent producers, farmer and rancher cooperatives, agricultural producer groups, and majority-controlled producer-based business ventures. Details of the Value-Added Producer Grant Program for Fiscal Year 2007 will be released soon. Announcement of the details will outline the application deadlines for the competitive grant funds. In preparation for the announcement, applicants are encouraged to begin the development of an application package for their specific project. USDA Rural Development's mission is to deliver programs that support increasing economic opportunity and improving the quality of life of the State's rural residents. The Agency provides equity and technical assistance to finance and foster growth in homeownership, business development, and critical community and technology infrastructure in rural America.
