wheatplot tours--May 31 in Saline County
Kansas K-State Research & Extension-Central Kansas District will host tours of two wheat plots in Saline County on May 31. The first tour will begin at 8:30 a.m., at the plots on the Duane Flaherty farm located one-half mile south of the I-70/Hedville Rd. exit 244, two miles west on Stimmel Rd., and one-fourth mile north on Link Rd. The plot contains seven varieties planted no-till into wheat stubble, burned wheat stubble and conventional tilled. The second tour will begin at 11 a.m. at the plots on the Vaughn Isaacson farm located one-fourth mile east of the I-135/Mentor Rd. exit 86 or one-half mile west of Mentor. The plot contains 16 varieties and two blends. New varieties in this plot include Smoky Hill from Westbred, Postrock from Agripro and Fuller from K-State. A complimentary meal will be served at the Mentor Fire Station following the tour, courtesy of Phillips Seed Farms, Inc. K-State Extension agronomists Stu Duncan and Jim Shroyer will discuss the implications of the Easter freeze and discuss strengths and weaknesses of the varieties in the plots. Extension plant pathologist Erick DeWolf will discuss wheat diseases in the 2007 wheat crop and disease ratings for varieties in the plot.
