Tornado destroys Kansas dealerships, donations sought for victims

At least a dozen or more employees of equipment dealerships found their homes completely destroyed following a tornado that leveled nearly all of Greensburg, Kan., on May 4. Two dealerships--Greensburg Farm Supply and Greensburg tractor & Implement--also were destroyed in the storm that packed 200 mph winds and produced a funnel cloud estimated between 1.4 and 1.7 miles wide.

The equipment Dealers Foundation is requesting donations to assist the employees of the Greensburg dealerships. "It's grim," says Jim Meinhardt, a Kansas dealer and EDF chairman. "A lot of people need a lot of help."

The EDF Disaster Relief Fund was established by the North American equipment Dealers Association and its affiliated associations to provide financial grants to equipment dealers and their employees in disaster areas for losses not covered by insurance and property damaged or destroyed. Grants from the fund may be used for food, living expenses, temporary accommodation, home repair, home replacement, permanent home construction, transportation accommodation, and other approved needs.

Eligibility requirements for dealership applicants are as follows:

--must have been employed at an equipment dealership in a federally declared disaster area on the day of the disaster,

--losses must be in an area declared a federal disaster area,

--home is/was in an area declared a federal disaster area and is/was the applicant's permanent residence at the time of the disaster,

--must have qualifying expenses or needs because of the disaster, and

--grant preferences will be given to NAEDA-affiliated dealers.

Contribution forms are available under "Headlines" at www.naeda.com. Donations also my be made by check (payable to equipment Dealers Foundation) and mailed to:
