Sutton County program targets 'do-it-yourself' rancher
Texas Texas Cooperative Extension will present a multi-county "Ranchers' Round Up" workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., May 22 at the Sutton County Civic Center. The center is located at 1700 N. Crockett in Sonora. "Do-It-Yourself" will be the theme for this year's workshop, said Pascual Hernandez, Extension agent for agriculture in Sutton County. "There will be a number of hands-on demonstrations and activities at the workshop to help ranchers take care of their own operations," Hernandez said. "Ranchers are used to doing things for themselves, but they sometimes require technical assistance and guidance from experts on certain subjects. We'll have experts from Extension, the Texas Department of Agriculture and Texas Wildlife Management Service presenting at the workshop." Presentations will address wildlife survey techniques, prescribed burn management and how to build a cost-effective skid sprayer for prescribed burns, pesticide drift management, predator control options and fecal sampling for parasites. Four Texas Department of Agriculture continuing educational units will be given for attendees with a pesticide applicator licenses. The program is sponsored by Extension in Sutton, Crockett and Schleicher counties, the Natural Resource Conservation Service and the Edwards Plateau Soil and Water Conservation District. Registration for the workshop is $15 on or before May 18 and $25 thereafter. Checks should be made payable to Sutton Ag Program Fund and mailed to SAPF, P.O. Box 1047, Sonora, TX 76950. "We're asking that people who wish to attend this program but need handicap assistance get in touch with the Sutton County office as soon as possible so we can try to accommodate them," Hernandez said.
