Society for Range Management summer range tour to be held in Ju

The Colorado Section of the Society for Range Management is hosting its summer range tour June 29, on the Taylor/Oswald Ranch in Cotopaxi. As recipients of the 2006 "Excellence in Rangeland Conservation" award from the CSSRM, the Oswalds were recognized for their integrated approach to improve the health, vigor, and production of their rangeland resource base while marketing a natural beef product to the public.

The tour will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon. It will be followed by a barbecue on the ranch. Other sponsors of the range tour include the Fremont Conservation District and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

The cost of the tour registration prior to June 15 is $35. This includes lunch on the day of the tour. Registration after June 15 is $40. All registrations must be made by June 22. Contact Janet Barnhart or Kimberly Diller at 719-275-4465, ext. 101 to register or for further information.

A pre-tour campout/bring your own barbecue potluck will be held June 28, at the KOA Campground, located on U.S. Highway 50 just east of Cotopaxi on the Arkansas River. Live "bluegrass "music by the Rocky Road Gals will be provided at the evening barbecue, followed by an informal jam session. Bring your instruments. The KOA campground offers tent sites, camper/RV sites with hookups, cabins, and/or motel rooms. If you plan to stay at the campground, you will need to make your own reservations through their website at www.coloradocampinkoa.com or call 1-800-562-2686.

There are also a number of family activities within minutes of Cotopaxi including fishing, commercial whitewater rafting, and hiking. The Royal Gorge is also within 30 minutes. Lodging is also available in Canon City or Salida.

Checks should be made payable to CSSRM and mailed to Kimberly Diller, c/o USDA-NRCS, 248 Dozier Avenue, Canon City, CO 81212. Further information about the tour will be posted on the CSSRM website at www.cssrm.org.
