SHPTV to host discussion, present program on water in KansasSmoky Hills Public Television May 21 announced that the station will host a public, town hall meeting-style discussion of water-related issues facing central and western Kansas, Lawrence Holden, the station's general manager and chief executive officer, said. The public meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m., May 30, at the high school in Colby. The doors will open to the public at 6:30 p.m. Subsequently, the station will present "Water in Kansas", a "live-on-tape" broadcast of that discussion the next evening. "Water in Kansas" is scheduled to air at 7 p.m., May 31, only on Smoky Hills Public Television. Panelists for the discussion will include: Lon Frahm, Colby--an area farmer, Frahm also is a member of the Kansas Water Authority and a board member with the Northwest Kansas Groundwater Management District No. 4 and the Kansas Geological Survey; Randy Gustafson, Hays--city manager of Hays; Ralph Ostmeyer, Grinnell--Republican Kansas State Senator from District 40; and Don Paxson, Penokee--owner-operator of Paxson Electric and an area farmer, Paxson also is a member of the Kansas Water Authority and has served on the boards of the Graham County Conservation District and the Kansas Association of Conservation Districts. The discussion will be moderated by Randall Weller, a retired Hill City attorney and member of Smoky Hills Public Television's board of directors. The focus of the discussion will be driven by the questions from the audience, according to Smoky Hills producer Bryan Dennett. "Few topics affect so many Kansans as the issues surrounding water--its availability, the ways it can serve agriculture and society, as well at the opportunities for conservation and wise water use," Holden explained, "Smoky Hills Public Television is delighted to convene a group of experts to help our viewers understand more about water usage and the ways it affects all of us." Encore broadcasts of "Water in Kansas" also are scheduled for June 14, at 7 p.m., and June 17 at 5 p.m. on Smoky Hills Public Televison. Smoky Hills Public Television also will hold its 25th Anniversary Thomas County Community Celebration in Colby May 30, prior to the town hall meeting. The public is invited to join in the festivities beginning at 5:30 p.m., at the high school. The event will be hosted by Bruce Frahm, Colby, a member of Smoky Hills' board of directors. Smoky Hills Public Television serves 70 counties in Kansas and one county in Nebraska. It is available on 120 cable systems and DirecTV and the Dish Network, which includes coverage in the Hutchinson and Wichita areas.
