Rocky Mountain Farmers Union summer camps not to be missedColorado "Think Globally, Act Locally" is the theme of Rocky Mountain Farmers Union's Cooperative Leadership Camps to be held in June in the mountain town of Bailey, Colo., just west of Denver. All camps are open to both RMFU members and non-members. "Camp participants spend four to five days in a beautiful mountain setting. Campers will get to know other young people from throughout the region, learn about cooperative principles, participate in field trips and have fun being kids," said Jennifer Luitjens Bahr, RMFU education director. "The theme for this year's camp will build awareness in young people of the concept of buying fresh, local foods. We will look at what buy fresh, local food means for one's health, the local community and the producers." Learning leadership skills is another aspect of the camp program. Those attending the Senior Camp have an opportunity to run for Rocky Mountain Farmers Union's Senior Youth Advisory Council. "In addition to being an outstanding educational opportunity, participants say they thoroughly enjoy the camps and can't wait to come back next year," said Bahr. "The friendships they make often last for years." The schedule is as follows: Junior Camp: June 4 to 7 (completed grades 2 through 4); Middle Camp: June 11 to 15 (completed grades 5 through 7); Senior Camp: June 18 to 22 (completed grades 8 through 12) Many young people enjoy dressing up for theme nights. The theme nights for the 2007 camps are "my favorite holiday," "African safari," and "beach party." Camp costs range between $120 to $200 depending on which camp and type of membership. Round-trip transportation is provided for a nominal fee for campers from most areas.
