Oklahoma wheat forecast at 161 million bushels
Oklahoma The state's May 1, wheat production is forecast at 161 million bushels, up 97 percent from last year, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Oklahoma Field Office. Acres harvested for grain, at 4.6 million acres, are up 1.2 million acres from last year. Average yield is forecast at 35.0 bushels per acre, up 11 bushel from 2006. Final 2006 cotton production is set at 203,000 bales, down 43 percent from 2005. The 180,000 harvested acres were down 25 percent from last year. An average yield of 541 pounds per acre was down 175 pounds from 2005. Cottonseed production for Oklahoma totaled 71.6 thousand tons, down 44 percent from 2005. Hay stocks from farms May 1, totaled 400 thousand tons, down 27 percent from last year's 550 thousand tons. Winter wheat production is forecast at 1.62 billion bushels, up 24 percent from 2006. Based on May 1 conditions, the U.S. yield is forecast at 43.5 bushels per acre, up 1.8 bushels from last year. Selected states and their winter wheat production include: Kansas, 361 million bushels, up 24 percent; Washington, 119.5 million bushels, up one percent; Texas, 132.6 million bushels, up 395 percent; and Colorado, 73.5 million bushels, up 84 percent.
