New fact sheet on using DDGS in swine diets

As the use ofcornfor ethanol grows, pork producers are asking about the use of co-products from the ethanol-making process. Iowa Pork Industry Center director John Mabry said a new fact sheet on one co-product, distillers dried grains with solubles will provide some much-desired information.

"'Distillers dried grains with solubles' is the first in a planned series called 'Feeding Bioenergy Coproducts to Swine,'" Mabry said. "The series will be available in pdf format on the IPIC website only, starting with this DDGS fact sheet numbered IPIC 11a."

The publication includes current Iowa ethanol production facts and statistics, as well as information on DDGS composition, quality, variability and nutrient availability. It also offers strategies for producers considering the use of DDGS in swine diets.

Animal science professor Mark Honeyman and research assistant Pete Lammers prepared this fact sheet and are developing additional topics for inclusion in the series.

IPIC was established in 1994 as a coordinated effort of the colleges of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. Its mission is to promote efficient pork production technologies in Iowa, maintain Iowa's pork industry leadership and strengthen rural development efforts. IPIC focuses its efforts on programs that are integral and complementary to ISU Extension. Through IPIC, Iowa producers receive accurate and timely information to make their operations more efficient and profitable.
