Canada receives controlled risk rating from OIE
The Canadian Cattlemen's Association is pleased that the World Organization for Animal Health, at its 75th General Session in Paris, France, has officially categorized Canada as a controlled risk country for bovine spongiform encephalopathy. "Canada and its beef producers have worked hard to implement rigorous standards to effectively control BSE ," says Hugh Lynch-Staunton, CCA president. "We know our surveillance system and eradication measures are effective and this classification acknowledges all the work that government and industry have done, and shows the rest of the world that Canada is a safe trading partner of quality beef. We are continuing to improve our system and will be implementing an enhanced feed ban in July which will further reduce the timeframe to effectively eradicate this disease in our country." The Government of Canada submitted a detailed application to the OIE in the fall of 2006 for the classification of controlled risk, based on its interlocking, multi-layered safeguards. The OIE approved a number of countries, including Canada and the United States who applied for the controlled risk status. "We are very pleased with this classification. The OIE provides sound, science-based standards that are internationally recognized and we are confident that our international trading partners will recognize Canada as a country committed to animal health and food safety and that they will not hesitate to re-establish full trade. There is no justifiable reason for any country that follows OIE standards to ban Canadian beef and cattle of any age," says Lynch-Staunton. 3 Star CO 5/28/07 10 B Date: 5/23/07
