North Dakota's rodeo queen resigns

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP)--North Dakota's rodeo queen has resigned but she isn't saying why she turned in her crown.

"I guess I really don't want to talk about it," said Reba Buchholz of Bismarck.

Buchholz began her reign as Miss Rodeo North Dakota in January.

Nancy Jo Bateman, president of the Miss Rodeo North Dakota Pageant Association, said Buchholz and pageant officials have agreed to keep details of the resignation secret.

"Obviously, it's been a really uncomfortable situation for Reba and the directors," Bateman said.

Bateman said association officials considered several issues before accepting Buchholz's resignation in March. She said it had to do with requirements not upheld by Buchholz in the agreement she signed after winning the title. That agreement includes rules ranging from dress code requirements to conduct expectations, required appearances and the prohibition of alcohol and drugs.

Buchholz must return a saddle and other prizes that she won, Bateman said.

The board offered the title to the runner-up. But Jessinta Hammer, of Kathryn, is now a foreign exchange student in Mexico, and turned down the title.

There were a total of five contestants for the rodeo queen crown but the others won't be asked to fill in, Bateman said.

"This will make the remainder of this year a unique time for our board, as we will not have a state rodeo queen," Bateman said. "But we remain committed to helping prepare other young ladies to be promoters of the sport of rodeo and the western heritage."

The next queen will be picked in Minot this fall.
