Finding inspirationDid your mother ever tell you, "You are judged by the company you keep?" If not, she should have. But I would change it to, "You are inspired by the company you keep." Think about the people you have surrounding you in your agricultural enterprise. Are they people who are inspiring, or are they nay-sayers who criticize every idea? Do they leave your mind whirling about the possibilities to come, or do they say it can't be done? All it takes for me to remember this is to spend some time at a meeting of farmers and ranchers, as I did this week at Commodity Classic. For me, there is nothing more inspiring than talking to a producer who loves what he does. He wants to find new ways of farming. He wants to challenge himself. It makes me want to do the same. I want to write about something new and different. Maybe it is just the news person in me, smelling a good story as I hear about producers entering into new adventures. But I don't think so. I think it is much more than that. Being around people who are good at what they do challenges you to be good too. It doesn't even matter if those people have the same occupation, their enthusiasm and hunger to do more is contagious. And by the same token, I've seen people with a good attitude and a positive approach become hard to work with when they change jobs. Why? Because their co-workers' bad habits rub off on them. Don't let this happen to you. Choose to spend your free time with other farmers and ranchers who will stretch your vision. It is a conscious choice. By going places to learn and grow, you will find others who want to do the same. You may just find yourself inspired--it's a good feeling.
