West Plains regional sales

The Ozarks Regional Stockyards, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 4,500 head March 20, compared to 4,131 head last week and 1,916 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, steers and heifers sold weak to $2 lower, with 550- to 650-weight heifers $2 to $4 lower. The supply was moderate. Demand was good, but did tail off somewhat as buyers finished their loads, which effected calf prices an additional $2 to $3 dollars in many cases, especially toward the close. Weaned calves remained most sought after, even though several new-crops were on the market. However, these needed to be the Real-McCoy even to stay within a close shouting price distance of their weaned and vaccinated counterparts. As most buyers had some of last week's money pulled back this week, which caused the majority to be a notch more selective as well. The supply consisted of 59% steers and 41% heifers, with nearly 42% over 600 pounds.
