St. Onge livestock auction report

The St. Onge Livestock Sales Co., Ltd., St. Onge, S.D., reported receipts of 1,720 head March 16, compared to 1,551 head last week and 1,253 head last year, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Compared to two weeks ago, feeder steers under 600 pounds sold steady, offerings over 600 pounds sold $1 to $3 higher in a limited test. Feeder heifers under 600 pounds sold steady to $3 higher, offerings over 600 pounds sold $4 to $6 higher. Feeder cows sold mostly steady. Slaughter cows sold steady to $2 lower. Slaughter bulls sold mostly steady. Demand was good for feeder cattle with most interest expressed on grass type feeders, moderate for slaughter cattle. Feeder receipts included 23% steers and 76% heifers, with 66% over 600 pounds. Receipts were about 67% feeder cattle, 4% slaughter cows and bulls, 25% replacement cows, with the balance bred cattle, pairs and other miscellaneous cattle.

Feeder steers: Medium and large frame 1, 18 head, 525 to 533 lbs., 123.50 to 128.75 (126.30); 5 head, 571 lbs., 115.50; 610 to 644 lbs., 113.00 to 115.50 (114.46); 13 head, 648 lbs., 109.75 fleshy; 652 to 693 lbs., 107.50 to 110.50 (108.30); 6 head, 724 lbs., 103.00. Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 19 head, 724l lbs., 102.00. Large frame 1, 7 head, 811 lbs., 94.00. Small and medium frame 1 to 2, 545 to 548 lbs., 115.00 to 123.50 (116.14); 10 head, 629 lbs., 108.75; 668 to 694 lbs., 102.75 to 108.00 (105.18).

Feeder Holstein steers: Large frame 3, 13 head, 653 lbs., 79.50.

Feeder heifers: Medium and large frame 1, 467 to 495 lbs., 115.00 to 119.00 (117.14); 17 head, 502 to 544 lbs., 113.00 to 116.00 (114.56); 8 head, 528 lbs., 110.00 fleshy; 552 to 598 lbs., 107.00 to 114.00 (111.63); 602 to 649 lbs., 104.50 to 109.00 (107.23); 650 to 692 lbs., 102.50 to 107.00 (105.11); 705 to 728 lbs., 95.50 to 102.00 (97.74); 6 head, 755 lbs., 93.25; 75 head, 791 lbs., 102.50 replacement. Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 30 head, 448 lbs., 120.50 thin; 6 head, 480 lbs., 118.00; 44 head, 493 lbs., 118.50 thin; 13 head, 641 to 643 lbs., 101.25 to 105.50 (102.55); 7 head, 703 to 723 lbs., 91.00 to 92.50 (91.63); 10 head, 752 lbs., 90.50. Large frame 1, 6 head, 563 lbs., 106.50; 18 head, 674 lbs., 101.50. Replacement females: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 2 to 4 years old, 865 to 1065 lbs., 76.00 to 84.00. Feeder cows, Medium and large frame 1 to 2, Young, 1215 lbs., few 60.50; middle aged, 1165 to 1370 lbs., 49.00 to 53.50; aged, 1000 to 1300 lbs., 47.00 to 48.00, few full 44.75 to 46.50. Large frame 1, 1400 to 1645 lbs., 47.00 to 50.00, few full 44.50.

Slaughter cows: Breakers, 75 to 80% lean, 1415 to 1800 lbs., 47.00 to 49.50; low dressing, 45.00 to 46.50. Boners, 80 to 85% lean, 1100 to 1200 lbs., 47.50 to 49.50; low dressing, 44.50 to 45.50. Lean, 85 to 90% lean, 1050 to 1350 lbs., 45.00 to 45.50; low dressing, 41.50.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, 1640 to 2205 lbs., 62.00 to 64.75; high dressing, 66.00.

Pairs: Medium and large frame 1, price per pair, 11 head, 1000 to 1300 lbs., with 100- to 250-lb. calves, 3 to 4 years old, black 1160.00 to 1375.00; 3 head, 1100 lbs., with 150-lb. calves, solid black 1200.00.

Bred cows: Medium and large frame 1, calve March to April, price per head, 7 head, 1335 lbs., 3 to 4 years old, black 1160.00; 3 head, 1540 lbs., solid, black 1025.00.
