Pork producers looking for Iowa's top environmental stewardsIowa Iowa pork producers spend considerable time and resources to help protect water, soil and air quality and the Iowa Pork Producers Association wants to start recognizing producers who do the best job of caring for the environment. The IPPA Environmental Committee has developed a new Environmental Steward Award program and all Iowa pork producers are eligible to compete. The award will be presented to a producer who demonstrates the positive contributions the pork industry makes to the natural environment. The inaugural award winner will be recognized at the 2008 Iowa Pork Congress and will automatically serve as Iowa's entry in the National Pork Board competition. "We want to show that Iowa pork producers are being good environmental stewards," said Bill Tentinger, chairman of the IPPA Environmental Committee and a producer from LeMars. "One of our goals is to show that it's not real hard to find pork producers in Iowa who are doing the right thing." Producers will be judged on manure management, soil and water conservation practices, air quality strategies, wildlife habitat management, environmental management innovations, and more. IPPA will accept nominations for the Environmental Steward Award until Aug. 1, 2007. Nomination forms are available at www.iowapork.org or by calling IPPA at 800-372-7675. Nomination forms should be sent to Ali Smith at IPPA, PO Box 71009, Clive, Iowa 50325-0009 or at asmith@iowapork.org. All nominations will have to meet the following eligibility requirements: --All nominations must be received by Aug. 1. Each nomination should be focused on a single production site. --The producer must have already obtained their National Animal Identification System premises identification number for their facility. --Previously honored state or national Environmental Steward Award winners are not eligible to receive the award again. Producers are encouraged to be thinking of potential 2007 nominees and to keep the new diversity of pork production in mind as they consider candidates. The selection committee will consist of IPPA staff, IPPA Environmental Committee members, a pork producer, an Iowa State University Extension representative and an outside environmental agency representative.
