McAlester livestock market report

The McAlester Union Livestock Market, McAlester, Okla., reported receipts of 1,650 head March 20, compared to 1,800 head last week and 800 head last year, according to the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News, Oklahoma City, Okla.

Compared to last week, stocker and feeder cattle were steady. An exception was noted on 400- to 450-pound steers sold $2 to $4 lower. Good attendance of buyers and active on better offerings, steady on balance. Quality was plain to average. Cattle were in thin to fleshy conditions. There were many more fleshy calves in trade. Receipts were comprised of 45% steers, 48% heifers with 20% feeder cattle over 600 pounds. Slaughter cows were steady. Slaughter bulls were $2 to $3 higher. Good attendance of buyers. Moderate interest in long bred cows and grazing cows returning to grass. No test on cow to calf pairs. A total of 240 cows and bulls sold with 35% going to packers.

Slaughter cows: Breakers, 10 head, 75 to 80% lean, 1240 to 1425 lbs., 49.50 to 52.00; high dressing, 53.50 to 55.00; low dressing, 46.00 to 49.00. Boners, 32 head, 80 to 85% lean, 1000 to 1375 lbs., 50.00 to 53.50; high dressing, 54.00 to 58.50; low dressing, 46.00 to 49.50. Lean, 18 head, 85 to 90% lean, 970 to 1100 lbs., 47.50 to 51.00; high dressing, 51.50 to 53.00; low dressing, 42.50 to 46.50. Light, 39 head, 85 to 92% lean, 625 to 975 lbs., 42.00 to 45.50; high dressing, 46.50 to 50.50; low dressing, 37.50 to 41.50.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, 21 head, 1175 to 1900 lbs., 63.00 to 66.50; high dressing, 70.00 to 72.00; low dressing, 58.50 to 62.00.

Replacement cows: Medium and large frame 1, 1+ to 2 years old, 915 to 1075 lbs., 6 to 8 months bred, average quality, 830.00 to 890.00; 5 to 6 years old, 1000 to 1250 lbs., 6 to 8 months bred, average quality, 750.00 to 790.00.
