Hay trading slow

In Kansas, the hay trade is slow. Demand is moderate for grinding and dairy alfalfa, stock cow quality hay, alfalfa pellets, brome, prairie hay and grass mulch, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, March 20. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Southwest:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady. Movement slow to moderate. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, supply tight, quality dropping, $180-$200; supreme dairy, $160-$170; premium, $150-$160. Utility/good grinding alfalfa, in the field, $135-$140, a little new crop contracted, $100-$120, mostly, $115. Ground and delivered, $150-$165, a little new crop contracted, $137-$138. For the week ending March 10, 12,473 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,561 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Cane, BMR Sudan and Millet, good, low nitrates, in large rounds, $70-$85; in medium and large squares, $85-$95. A little new crop, good Oat hay contracted, in large squares, $120.

South central:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady, alfalfa pellets steady to $5 higher. Movement moderate. Dairy alfalfa, supreme, $140-$165; premium, $125-$140; Stock cow, 120-140. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, in the field, $115-$130, mostly, $120, new crop contracted, $97-$110. Ground and delivered, $130-$150, new crop contracted, $118. For the week ending March 10, 3,605 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,002 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% and 17% protein, $160-$170, mostly, $165; dehydrated, 17% protein, $190. BMR Sudan or Millet good, low nitrates, in medium and large squares, $80-$100; Sudan, good, low nitrates, in large rounds, $60-$70. Good failed milo hay, in large squares, $60-$75. Straw, in large squares, $55, some, $60-$63.50 delivered.

Southeast:

Alfalfa, brome and prairie hay steady, hay supplies tight. Movement moderate. Alfalfa, horse and goat, in medium squares, $160, horse, in small squares, $200. Supreme dairy alfalfa, $120-$150; premium, $110-$120. Bluestem, in small squares, good, $100-$125; in medium and large squares, $95-$100, some, $110-$120; in large rounds, $85-$95. Brome, in small squares, premium, $135; good, $100-$110; in medium and large squares, $90-$100, a little, $120; in large rounds, $90-$95. Soybean hay, good, in large squares, $100-$125. Haygrazer, good, low nitrates, in medium squares, $80-$100; in large rounds, $70-$80. Baled Milo hay, in large squares, $80. CWF grass mulch, in large rounds, $30/bale or $50/ton. New crop, good Oat hay, contracted in 3x4x8 squares, $110.

Northwest:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady. Movement slow to moderate. Supreme dairy alfalfa, $120-$140; premium, $120-$130; Stock cow, $110-$120. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, in the field or shipped in, $110-$120; ground and delivered, $125-$150. BMR Sudan, in large squares, $100. Sudan, good, low nitrates, in large squares, $60-$75, mostly, $75.

North central/northeast:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa, prairie hay and brome steady. Movement slow to moderate. Horse alfalfa, supplies tight, $160; supreme dairy, $120-$145; premium, $110-$140. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, in the field, $100-$120; shipped in, $105-$125; ground on truck, $110-$130. Grass hay, bluestem, in small squares, good, $90-$110; in medium squares, $90-$100; in large rounds, $80-$90. Brome, supply tight, premium, in small squares, $110-$125; good, in small square, $90-$110; in medium squares, $90-$100; in large rounds, $80-$100; fair, in large rounds, $65-$80. Straw, in small squares, $2.50/bale or $3/bale delivered; in medium and large squares, $50-$65/ton. Soybean hay, good, in large squares, $90-$100. Sudan or Cane, good, low nitrates, in large squares, $60-$80. CWF grass mulch, in small squares, $3.25 or $3.75 delivered; in large rounds, $80 delivered.
