Hay prices remain steady on limited inventories

In Nebraska and the East River area of South Dakota, hay sales trended fully steady to firm. Demand was very good on a limited supply. Pellet sales were fully steady, with very good demand and mostly moderate trade activity, according to the USDA-Market News Service, March 16. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Northeast: Supreme alfalfa, in large squares, $140; premium, in large squares, $130-$140; good, in large squares, $115-$120; in large rounds, $80-$100; fair, in large squares, $90-$100; in large rounds, $60-$80. Ground and delivered, $115. Premium/good grass, in small squares, $100-$130; good, in large rounds, $80-$100. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets, 17% protein, $175-$180. Straw, in large squares, $50-$55.

Platte Valley: Supreme alfalfa, in small squares, $150-$160; premium, in large squares, $125-$135; fair/good, in large squares, $90-$110; good, in large rounds, $85-$100; fair, in large rounds, $80. Good grass, in large rounds, $60-$80. Oat hay, in large squares, $80. Straw, in large rounds, $55-$60. Ground and delivered, $120-$125. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets, 17% protein, $175-$180.

East River area of South Dakota: Supreme alfalfa, in small squares, $200; in large squares, $125-$145; premium, $110-$150; good, $85-$100. Grinding quality, $85-$100. Premium, in large rounds, $85-$100; good, $75-$90. Grinding quality, $75-$90. Fair/good, $50-$70. Utility/fair, scarce. Premium grass, in small and large squares, no sales confirmed; in large rounds, no sales confirmed; good, $80-$90; good, $75-$90; fair, no sales confirmed. Straw, in large squares, $20/bale. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 17% protein, $160; 15% protein, $155.

In Iowa, hay sales were fully steady to firm. Demand was very good on limited inventories. Trading was moderate to active with very good inquiry especially for new crop hay. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

South central/north central: Premium alfalfa, in large and small squares, $120-$145; in large rounds, $65-$85; good, in large and small squares, $100; in large rounds, $48-$60; fair, in large squares, $55-$60; in large rounds, $40-$50. Good/premium alfalfa-grass mix, in small squares, $110-$120. Premium grass, in large squares, $120-$140; good, in large squares, $120.

Rock Valley: Premium alfalfa, in small squares, $145-$165; in large squares, $110-$122.50; in large rounds, $107.50-$115, load, $130; good, $92.50-$95; good, $97.50. Premium alfalfa mix, in large squares, $112.50; in large rounds, $117.50; good, $90-$95. Premium grass, in small squares, $125, load, $152.50; in large squares, $100-$107.50; in large rounds, $110-$135; good, $90. In Montana, hay sales were steady to firm with very little reported sales. Demand remains very good as supply is rapidly dwindling and turn-out time is still six weeks away. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Premium alfalfa: Premium, in small squares, $120-$125; good/premium, in large squares and rounds, $80-$90, small lot, $105, $140 delivered; good, in large squares and rounds, $70-$90. Premium alfalfa-grass mix, in small squares, $120-$125; good, in large squares and rounds, $70-$85. Grass, no reported sales. Premium pure timothy, in small squares, $140-$150. Premium timothy-mixed grass hay, in small squares, $150, $5/bale. Straw, in large squares and rounds, $35-$40; in small squares, $40.

In Wyoming, western Nebraska and western South Dakota, the hay trade activity at a near standstill with very few sales reported. Demand good to very good. Hay supplies very short with most areas completely sold out. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Eastern Wyoming: Supreme alfalfa, $115-$130; Good/premium, $110-$125; ground and delivered, $126-$136. Premium alfalfa-orchard for horses, $155. Premium alfalfa-timothy, $155; good, $125. Premium timothy, $175. Good grass hay, $125. Dehydrated alfalfa pellets, 17% protein, $174 delivered wholesale.

Central/western Wyoming: Good/premium alfalfa, $100-$130, $130-$150 delivered. Alfalfa-grass hay, $100. Good mixed grass, $100, $135-$145 delivered. Oat hay, $100, $135-$145 delivered.

Western Nebraska: Alfalfa, new crop contract, first cutting, $100; supreme, $120-$140; for elk, $160; premium, $100-$110; fair/good, $100, some, $145, $135 delivered; ground and delivered, $110-$130. Good grass hay, $125. corn stalks, $47-$50, $60 delivered; ground and delivered, $92. wheat straw, $25-$60. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 13% protein, less than 10 tons, $260i; 10-23 tons, $240; over 24 tons, $230.

Western South Dakota: Premium alfalfa, $130-$133 delivered; good, $95-$120 delivered. Grass hay, $90 delivered. Alfalfa-oat hay, $90 delivered. wheat hay, $80 delivered. wheat straw, $80-$85.

In Colorado, hay prices remain steady once again. The larger majority of the hay left is already sold. Demand and inquiries good on extremely limited and tight supplies. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Northeast: Supreme alfalfa, in large squares, $160-$180, instances, $180-$200, $145-$150 delivered; premium, in large squares, $130-$160, $130-$140 delivered; in small squares, $160-$220. Utility/fair, in large squares and rounds, $115-$120, spots, $130-$145 delivered. Ground and delivered, $150-$160. Premium alfalfa-grass mix, in small squares, $200-$230; in large rounds, $165. Premium grass, in small squares, $220-$265; good, in large squares, $130-$135 delivered. Cane-millet, in large squares, $100-$120. corn stalks, in large squares, mostly, $100, $105-$110 delivered.

Good/premium brome, in large squares, $90-$140. Good brome, $60-$120. Fair brome, some mixed with grass, in rounds, $35-$50/bale. Good timothy hay, in small squares, $3-$4.50/bale. Panhandle/western feedlot area: Good grinding alfalfa, in the field or bale pile, $105-$120. Ground and delivered, $140-$150.

Central/eastern: Premium grass, in large squares, $90-$110; in small squares, $90-$110; in large rounds, $90-$110; good, in small squares, $80-$100; in large rounds, $80-$100; fair, $60-$80.
