Field preparations taking farmers timeNew Mexico There were 6.7 days suitable for field work during the week ending March 18, and according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, New Mexico Field Office, March 19, farmers spent the week preparing their fields for planting and irrigating. Topsoil moisture was 27 percent very short, 28 percent short, 44 percent adequate and 1 percent surplus. Wind damage was 13 percent light. Freeze damage was reported as 6 percent light. Alfalfa was reported as 4 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 50 percent good and 16 percent excellent. Irrigated winter wheat was reported as 38 percent fair, 44 percent good and 18 percent excellent with 50 percent grazed. Dry winter wheat was reported as 84 percent fair, 11 percent good and 5 percent excellent with 45 percent grazed. Total winter wheat was reported as 66 percent fair, 24 percent good and 10 percent excellent with 47 percent grazed. Lettuce was reported as 50 percent fair and 50 percent good. Onion conditions were reported as 75 percent good and 25 percent excellent with 97 percent planted. Chile was reported as 20 percent planted. Cattle conditions were reported at 3 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 67 percent good and 2 percent excellent. Sheep conditions were reported as 8 percent very poor, 15 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 37 percent good. Range and pasture conditions were reported as 1 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 40 percent fair, 50 percent good and 3 percent excellent. Ranchers are calving, branding and working cattle.
