Farm Bureau groups make annual trip to Washington, D.C.By Doug Rich (Washington, D.C. March 14)-A sure sign of spring is farm groups flocking to Washington, D.C. to meet with their elected representatives. Farmers and ranchers are out in force this lobbying for their version of the new farm bill. County Farm Bureau presidents, their spouses and families from Missouri and Kansas are in Washington, D.C. this week. The two groups met as one at USDA where they heard from Chuck Conner-Deputy Secretary USDA, Bruce Knight-Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs, Joh Scholl - EPA, and Missouri Congressman Kenny Hulschof. Charles Kruse, Missouri Farm Bureau president and Steve Baccus Kansas Farm Bureau president shared the stage during the live radio program AgriTalk. Kruse and Baccus said this annual trip to the nation's capitol is a real learning experience for their members. Also in town this week were the Governor of Kansas Kathleen Sebelius, the Lieutenant Governor of Kansas Mark Parkinson, the Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Adrian Polanski, and the Kansas Farm Bill Coalition. They were in town lobbying hard for the National Bio-and Agro-Defense Facility. Kansas is one of 11 states in the running for this facility. The trip concludes today with Farm Bureau members visiting Congressional members of the House and Senate Ag Committee. 1 Star WK Date: 3/8/07
