Weld Master Gardeners provide hotline, resources

Too many dandelions in your lawn? Don't know when to prune your lilacs or roses? Want to conserve water while enjoying a thriving lawn and beautiful perennials? Weld County Master Gardeners can help.

Highly trained Master Garden volunteers work with Colorado State University and Weld County Cooperative Extension to provide the public with research-based home horticultural information and tips for environmentally responsible gardening and landscaping. The mission of the Master Gardener program centers around helping individuals making informed decisions about plants to develop individuals, strengthen families, protect neighborhood environments, and build communities.

There are several ways the public can receive assistance, according to Fred Petersen, Weld County Extension director. Weld gardeners can call the Master Gardener Hotline at 970-356-4000, ext. 2065. Volunteers are available Monday through Friday, from 9 to 5, to answer questions and discuss diagnostic solutions to gardening problems. Questions can be left on the hotline voicemail and a volunteer will return the call promptly the same day. Solutions are supported with resources that include printed fact sheets and several helpful websites. Plant specimens can be brought in to the Cooperative Extension office in Island Grove Park if necessary to identify problems.

Master Gardener volunteers are also available for diagnostic clinics at the Weld County Extension office and out in the community. Knowledgeable volunteers can share their expertise as speakers at gardening, school, and church groups and as consultants for community gardening projects. Master Gardeners sponsor an information booth at most Greeley and Windsor Saturday farmers markets, beginning May 19 at the first Greeley farmers market of the season. Other activities include information booths at fairs and trade shows and community beautification projects such as the Greeley downtown planters.

To schedule a master gardener speaker, or for more information on becoming a master gardener, call Sharon Benson, Extension Office manager, at 970-304-6535, ext. 2076.

The Weld County Master Gardener program is administered by Colorado State University Cooperative Extension and funded through Weld County Cooperative Extension Service.
