Montana

Above normal precipitation was received across most of the state during the week ending May 27, and Grass Range had the most moisture at 3.64 inches, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, May 29.

Albion had the high temperature for the 3rd week in a row at 86 degrees. Sula had the low of 19 degrees. Ninety percent of topsoil moisture is rated adequate and surplus compared to 81 percent last week and 76 percent last year. Subsoil moisture adequate and surplus is 76 percent, up from last week's 67 percent and last year's 61 percent. The number of days available for farmers to work in the field was limited to 2.6 days.

The weather outlook for June 5 through June 11 is for above normal temperatures and near normal precipitation east of the continental divide and for above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation west of the divide. Normal temperatures for this period in Montana are highs in the mid 60s to the upper 70s and lows in the mid 30s to the lower 50s.

Barley, oats, and spring wheat have entered the boot stage. Winter wheat and barley conditions are similar to last week. Seventy-one percent of spring wheat is rated good to excellent compared to 74 percent last week and 75 percent last year. Heavy rains and storms in some Northeastern counties caused difficulty with the emergence of oilseeds.

Grazing conditions continue to improve. Sixty-nine percent of range and pasture feed conditions are rated good to excellent compared to 66 percent last week and 60 percent last year. Lambing is nearly complete.
