Sporting events available for the whole family0There are nine sporting events scheduled to be part of the 2007 Beef Empire Days celebration. From calf roping to cutting and from softball to golf, there are offerings for every interest. Leading the pack in 2007 is the Beef Empire tennis tournament, which gets underway on June 2, at 8 a.m. at the Grimsley-Harmon tennis complex. The tournament includes singles, doubles, mixed doubles, men, women and youth. The event concludes on June 3. Also on the morning of June 2, Finnup Park plays host to the horseshoe tournament, with qualifying beginning at 9 a.m. Horseshoes has been a favorite event for all ages. The Garden City Family YMCA also will sponsor the 3-on-3 basketball frenzy tournament on June 2 and 3, at noon. All teams are guaranteed three games with T-shirts awarded to the winners in each division. The event takes place at the Finnup Park basketball courts. Feedlot team roping and sponsors riding will be held on June 3, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Finney County fairgrounds arena. Cowboys and cowgirls will compete in team roping and barrel racing events that are open to any Beef Empire Days sponsor and /or their employees. The Beef Empire Days PRCA Rodeo kicks off on June 6, with slack that afternoon and evening. Full performances featuring food, queens and a great rodeo will be held on June 7 to 9. The A.G. Edwards Celebrity team roping event is always exciting as "legends" in the rodeo arena take on the "younger bucks." This perennial favorite is repeated in Dodge City during the Dodge City Days Rodeo, with the overall winners having year-round bragging rights. The event will be held as part of the June 6 slack activities at the rodeo. Korkow Rodeo Company returns as the stock contractor and this year's specialty act is Auburn, Neb., native Jerry W. Olson. He has been entertaining rodeo crowds for more than 20 years with his trick roping and miniature horse acts. The Beef Empire Days PRCA Rodeo committee supports breast cancer awareness and has dubbed the June 7 performance as "Tough Enough to Wear Pink" night at the rodeo in support of the cause. This is an excellent opportunity to witness first class professional rodeo with clowns, bull riders, and cowboys in Garden City, Kan. The annual Hoof it to Health Road Run leads the way on June 9, with the Garden City Family YMCA hosting the event beginning at 7:30 a.m. There will be 5K and 10K events with registration beginning at 6:45 a.m. Golfing action also begins on June 9 with a four-man scramble at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course. Tee times will be available beginning at 9 a.m. and teams may begin registering and securing tee times on May 15. The Bikers for Beef--Family Crisis Services motorcycle poker run will begin registration at Motorsports West at 8:30 a.m., with the riders heading out around 9:45 a.m. for a ride that ends at Stevens Park for lunch. The ride is open to any type motorcycle and benefits the work of Family Crisis Services. The High Plains Archery 3D Tournament takes place at the archery range on June 10, at 10 a.m. A post Beef Empire Days event is the Beef Empire cutting horse competition slated for June 16 and 17 at the Horse Palace on the Finney County fairgrounds. Competitors from Kansas, Nebraska, Texas and Oklahoma are expected for the weekend competition. Riders will compete in 13 sanctioned classes, and this event provides an excellent opportunity to see the athletes of the equine world cut and control cattle from a herd. None Date: 5/25/07
