wheatproducers approve assessment increase

Colorado

Colorado wheat Administrative Committee President Dan Anderson from Haxtun was optimistic and pleased with the referendum results.

"Producer approval of the assessment increase will allow CWAC to address some pressing research and marketing concerns in light of declining state and federal support."

"Research is the lifeblood of the wheat industry. Additional funding will address critical research in key areas such as yield improvement, heat and drought tolerance, disease and insect resistance and improved quality for both domestic and export markets."

He said additional support for market development is also vital. "New competition from non-traditional, wheat exporting countries continues to intensify. Educating overseas customers about the value and utility of Colorado wheat has never been more important as we contend for market share with Australia, Canada, Argentina, the European Union and the Baltic states."

"We thank Colorado wheat producers for their support and the faith they placed in their CWAC," said Anderson. "We have already set to work outlining our strategic plan to bring these efforts to fruition and will work diligently to accomplish these goals to protect our Colorado wheat industry into the future.

CWAC is the producer-elected Board of Control for the Colorado wheat Marketing Order whose purpose is to decide how the assessment funds are to be spent for research, promotion and education activities.
