Tulia livestock market report

The Tulia Livestock Auction Inc., Tulia, Texas, reported receipts of 2,425 head June 18, compared to 3,525 head last week and 1,921 head last year, according to the Texas Department of Agriculture News-USDA Market News, Amarillo, Texas.

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers over 700 pounds were steady with some firmness evident, under 700 pounds were weak to $3 lower on a light test. Six weight heifers appeared to exhibit the greatest decline, with a few 1 to 2 grade instances $5 lower. Hot weather and available water in pens prior to the sale allowed some cattle to take on a liberal fill. Buyers were aggressive for cattle over 700 pounds but lighter weight feeders showed definite weakness as corn prices and high feed costs weighed heavily on them. The few new crop calves on offer also showed significant declines although not really enough for an accurate test. Slaughter cows were steady to firm on a limited test and bulls not well tested. Trade was active. Demand was moderate to good. The bulk of the supply were Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 650- to 900-pound feeder steers and heifers. Feeder cattle accounted for 98% and slaughter cows and bulls 2% of the run. In the feeder supply, steers made up approximately 44% of the run, heifers 56%, steers and heifers over 600 pounds totaled 90%.
