Taiwan buys South Dakota wheatPIERRE, S.D. (AP)--A delegation from Taiwan, the world's second-largest consumer of U.S. wheat, purchased almost $26 million worth of South Dakota wheat on June 8. A nine-member contingent of Taiwan government officials and flour mill company representatives signed an agreement with the South Dakota wheat Commission during a ceremony at the state Capitol. The agreement covers 2008 and 2009. Taiwan plans to buy 3.8 million bushels of South Dakota wheat and a total of almost 62.5 million bushels of U.S. wheat. The approximate value of $425 million is $53 million more than the last Taiwanese purchase in 2005. The Taiwanese say they like U.S. wheat because of its high quality. Kevin Yen-Hung Cho, a flour company manager, said his customers like American wheat for noodles, breads and other items. Date: 6/20/07
