Stafford high school student wins national essay contestIndiana Yance Farney was recently awarded as one of ten winners of the National FFA Organization Risk Management Essay Contest. The son of Tyler and Keva Farney, Yance's essay was based on his supervised agricultural experience program that is a part of the Stafford High School agricultural education program. Yance's agriculture teacher and FFA advisor is Merlyn Spare. As a result of winning this contest, Yance and his advisor received an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, May 2 to 6 where they visited with their congressional representatives, went on tours of the U.S. Capitol and White House and met with the Secretary of Agriculture and other U.S. Department of Agriculture officials. Following a special recognition ceremony at the USDA, the winners had lunch in the Secretary's Dining Room. With the phase out and eventual elimination of federal farm price and income supports, it is critical that today's students and farm operators become aware of the new risk environment in production agriculture and develop an understanding of how to manage risk. This contest is offered to stimulate today's agriculture students' interest in, knowledge of and successful selection and use of risk management tools. In addition, the contest provides a way to recognize students who have developed their communication skills and can effectively share key information regarding implementing risk management tools. The contest is offered by the National FFA Organization in partnership with the Risk Management Agency, U.S. Department of Agriculture, as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. FFA is a national youth organization of 495,046 student members preparing for leadership careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture with 7,242 local chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. FFA strives to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
