KHRC announces new housing programs to aid Greensburg reconstru
Kansas As emergency response efforts in Greensburg turn to cleanup and recovery, Kansas Housing Resources Corporation has announced a multi-pronged, long-term strategy to help affected families rebuild their lives and homes. "The people of Greensburg need temporary housing today, but will also need help tomorrow when the city rebuilds," said Gary Allsup, KHRC Executive Director. "The strategies outlined by KHRC will help ensure appropriate resources are available when reconstruction begins." Governor Kathleen Sebelius said the number one goal is to help Greensburg families get their lives back on track. "It will take time, hard work and cooperation, but once we get through the massive clean-up, it's good to know there is help around the corner for Greensburg residents," said Sebelilus. The reconstruction assistance programs announced by KHRC involve tenant based rental assistance, rental property development, new home construction and the purchase of existing homes in Greensburg 's surrounding areas. A summary of each program follows:
Tenant based rental assistance Kansas Housing Resources Corporation is partnering with the Ford County Housing Authority to provide families impacted by the tornado with rental assistance and security/utility deposits for up to six months. --Rental assistance is a payment made directly to the landlord to help families pay their rent. --Eligible families must earn 60 percent or below of the area median income--$29,880 for a family of four in Kiowa County . --For more information, contact the Ford County Housing Authority at 620-225-8230.
First time homebuyer waivers Families affected by the tornado who wish to buy existing homes in the Kiowa County area can take advantage of down payment and closing cost assistance through KHRC's First Time Homebuyer Program. KHRC is waiving the first-time homebuyer requirement and the homeowner investment of 2 percent. In addition, KHRC has increased the subsidy amount to 20 percent of the purchase price, up to a maximum of $25,000. Eligible households must have income at or below 80 percent of the area median--$39,850 for a family of four in Kiowa County. For more information, contact Christine Reimler at 785-296-4818.
Rental property development Opening a special allocation round, KHRC is accepting applications from developers to build new affordable rental housing units in the Greensburg area. KHRC can provide loans and/or housing tax credits to help offset development costs. --Households residing in the new units must have income at or below 60 percent of the area median--$29,880 for a family of four in Kiowa County . --Interested developers may submit an application at any time. --For more information, contact Fred Bentley at 785-296-3724.
New home construction Greensburg residents can submit applications for KHRC's new Homebuyer Construction program. KHRC will provide down payment/closing cost assistance to help families build new owner-occupied housing in Greensburg . --Households residing in the new units must have income at or below 120 percent of the state median--$77,915 for a family of four. --For more information, contact Christine Reimler at 785-296-4818.
