Wind hinders some fieldworkIowa Farmers had a hard time applying pesticides due to the wind during the week ending June 10, which means field crops are competing with healthy weeds, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Iowa Field Office, June 11. The wind has helped dry out hay and allowed hay harvesting to continue. First cutting of hay is showing weeds due to the hard frost earlier in the season. Wind has caused some sand blasting in the field crops. corn root systems are still shallow but corn yellowed from excess moisture is beginning to green up. Wide variation is being seen in corn stands depending on the date planted. Weather has been good for livestock. There were 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 6.0 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture rated zero percent very short, 7 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 16 percent surplus across the state. Subsoil moisture rated zero percent very short, 2 percent short, 78 percent adequate, and 20 percent surplus. Oats headed are at 31 percent, behind last year's 38 percent and the five-year average of 37 percent. The condition of the oat crop is zero percent very poor, 2 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 60 percent good, and 15 percent excellent. An estimated 6 percent of the corn has been or will be replanted. Average corn height is 14 inches. corn condition across the state is 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 21 percent excellent. soybeans are 93 percent emerged. Five percent of soybeans have been or will be replanted. Soybean condition is zero percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 19 percent fair, 60 percent good, and 18 percent excellent. First cutting of alfalfa hay, at 49 percent complete, is 11 days behind last year's 84 percent and the five-year average of 59 percent. All hay condition is 2 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 35 percent fair, 43 percent good, and 11 percent excellent. Pasture condition rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 17 percent excellent. Date: 6/13/07
