Wind energy agreement reached

PIERRE, S.D. (AP)--Additional electric needs at two state universities will come from a wind farm to be built near Wessington Springs.

Madison-based Heartland Consumers Power District already provides South Dakota State University and the University of South Dakota with electricity they need in excess of the power received from Missouri River dams.

Babcock & Brown will build and operate a wind farm that's expected to be operating by the end of 2008.

Heartland has agreed to purchase all the power generated at the wind farm and will use it for the SDSU and USD needs.

Gov. Mike Rounds and Heartland planned to sign an agreement May 23 stating that wind energy from within the state will go to the two campuses.
