Governor awards Colorado companies for excellence in exporting

Colorado

Governor Bill Ritter announced this year's winners of the Governor's Award for Excellence in Exporting. The award honors Colorado companies that have made outstanding contributions to exporting during the past year.

Leprino Foods Company won the Agriculture Award for Excellence in Exporting and is a world leader in premium-quality pasta filata cheese manufacturing and the largest U.S. exporter of whey products.

Leprino Foods serves as the principal, and in many cases the exclusive, cheese supplier to many of the major pizza chains, independent pizza operators and frozen food manufacturers throughout the U. S. and abroad. Sweet whey, whey protein, and lactose are shipped globally for use in infant formula, meal replacement, sports nutrition bars, beverages and powders, and confections. A closely-held company, Leprino began in 1950 as a small family-owned grocery business on the same Northwest Denver corner where the corporate office stands today.

Other winners include:

Small-Sized Manufacturer--Qualmark Corporation;

Large-Sized Manufacturer--Western Slope Industries, Inc.;

Service Category--Merrick & Company.

The Markets Division at the Colorado Department of Agriculture provides assistance to Colorado agricultural and food companies to develop market opportunities in Colorado, across the nation, and around the globe. Programs include Colorado Proud for identifying and promoting products grown, raised, or processed in Colorado; the Colorado Wine Board and International Marketing assistance programs help companies develop global markets.

International marketing specialists are available to assist in beginning and expanding Colorado's export markets. Assistance includes training for export operations, assessment of market options, international finance and accessing U.S. Department of Agriculture funding support for exporters.
