Tulia livestock auction report

The Tulia Livestock Auction Inc., Tulia, Texas, reported receipts of 6,317 head June 4, compared to 5,310 head last year, according to the Texas Department of Agriculture News-USDA Market News, Amarillo, Texas.

Compared to two weeks ago, feeder steers and heifers over 600 pounds were mostly steady, under 600 pounds were not well tested and most were new crop calves. There was a wider variety of grades available and the buyers were more selective on quality, fill, and flesh with a weaker undertone noted on some of the 2 and 3 grades. Cattle picked up fill as the sale progressed due to warm temperatures and available water. Fleshy new crop calves continue to trade $5 to $10 under weaned counterparts and are making up a percentage of the limited calf numbers. Slaughter cows and bulls were firm to $1 higher. Trade was active. Demand was good. The bulk of the supply were Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 600- to 950-pound feeder steers and heifers. Feeder cattle accounted for 98% and slaughter cows and bulls 2% of the run. In the feeder supply, steers made up approximately 70% of the run, heifers 30%, steers and heifers over 600 pounds totaled 90%.
